Itumeleng Isaac Khune embodies a trait that football has lost in its quest to cash in the biggest sum – loyalty. Kaizer Chiefs is the only club that Khune has represented in his professional career. He started out in the youth setup in 1999 and after four years, he graduated from the academy and became part of the senior team.

He made his debut in 2007, three years after he joined the senior side and proved to be a safe pair of hands for the Amakhosi. The 2021/22 campaign is his 87th season in the league with Kaizer and over the years, has tasted victory and defeats in equal measure.

Khune has collected a number of individuals as well as club awards. He’s twice been named the Players Player of the season, the South African Sports Awards, thrice the PSL Goalkeeper of the year, twice Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Season and Kaizer Chiefs Players’ Player of the Season.

His current contract runs until 2023 and it may be his final, but Khune aims at matching Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon who stepped away from international football when he was over 40. 

In 2018, the government imposed a 45% tax rate on individuals who earn more than R1.5 million and the goalie falls into this tax bracket.

As his annual pay stands at R5.7 million, it means that after tax, Itumeleng Khune’s salary drops to around R2.6 million.

In 2021, the veteran keeper allegedly lost a Danone Dan Up sponsorship deal estimated to bring him R1 million. The brand failed to renew Khune’s contract due to undisclosed reasons. 

Other brands that he’s worked with include Kiwi Shoe Polish, Vaseline For Men, and Kentucky amongst others.
